In this edition of our Employee Spotlight series, we are excited to feature one of our dedicated mentors, Thomas Lipps. Both before and during his time as part of the Modern Psych team, his journey has blended resilience and a relentless pursuit of professional growth. Thomas truly embodies the spirit of hope and transformation Modern Psych stands for. We got the chance to sit down with Thomas to discuss his background and experience. Here’s what he had to say:
What is your role at Modern Psych?
I’m a Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant—or CDCA Mentor. My job is to provide guidance, advice, feedback and support to our residents at Genesis. As well as being their role model, teacher, counselor, and advisor. Meanwhile, as a shift lead, my commitment to my colleagues is rooted in treating everyone with love and providing the necessary guidance and coaching.
Could you tell us about your career and background?
While working at Modern Psych, I successfully obtained my second CDCA certification. Simultaneously, I’m working towards an associate degree, aiming to become a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC). I’m hoping this enables me to effectively assist clients battling addiction and mental health issues.
What inspired you to pursue this career?
Drawing on my own experiences as a recovered addict and my faith as a Christian, I was deeply inspired by my desire to help those who struggle with addiction and mental illness. My driving principle is a firm belief that every person deserves happiness, and I will do everything in my power to make that happen.
What led you to work for Modern Psych?
I found Modern Psych’s culture of inclusivity and nonjudgement incredibly attractive. The chance to work alongside my friend Joe McCoy was also a motivating factor. The team’s willingness to employ and support individuals with a past, including felons and those in recovery from addiction, truly resonated with my personal beliefs and experiences.
Modern Psych is a vibrant, fun, and loving atmosphere. It’s a place where diversity thrives, where people of all types of backgrounds can come together, and where we’re all united by a singular mission to help others.
What is the most unique part about working for Modern Psych?
Everyone at Modern Psych is committed to continual learning and education. So, we’re always ready to offer the highest standard of treatment.
What is Your favorite part of your job?
Seeing an individual come to Genesis feeling broken, defeated, and devoid of hope, then finish the program emanating joy, brimming with happiness, and having their faith in life restored. That’s always a great experience, so it’s definitely the best part of what I do.
