The grip of drug addiction on communities is both devastating and far-reaching. The road to recovery is complex, requiring more than just the will to recover; it necessitates comprehensive and evidence-based treatments. At Modern Psychiatry and Wellness we stand at the forefront of deploying Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) as a pivotal component in modern addiction treatment plans. Our commitment is to guide individuals through their journey of recovery, armed with science, compassion, and a deep understanding of addiction.
What is Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)?
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is an innovative and evidence-based approach that combines medication with counseling and behavioral therapies to treat substance use disorders. This treatment is particularly effective for addiction to opioids, alcohol, and nicotine, among other substances. MAT’s core purpose is not merely to replace one drug with another but to provide a carefully controlled dose of medication to overcome the use of a misused substance. It addresses critical aspects of recovery, including detoxification, craving reduction, blocking the effects of illicit drugs, and restoring body functions without the negative euphoric effects of the substance abused.
Variety of MAT Options
A range of MAT options is available at MPW, showing a commitment to providing personalized treatment plans that address the unique needs of each individual facing substance use disorders.
Easy Access to MAT Services
MPW offers easy access to MAT services, from initial assessments and through the process for ongoing management, ensuring individuals seeking help have a clear pathway to start their recovery journey.
Integration with Other Treatments
The MAT program at MPW is integrated with other treatment modalities, such as therapy and counseling, to support the biological, psychological, and social aspects of addiction recovery.
How Does MAT Work?
Addiction is both a biological and psychological condition. MAT works by normalizing brain chemistry, blocking the euphoric effects of alcohol and opioids, relieving physiological cravings, and normalizing body functions without the negative effects of the initially abused substance. At MPW, our medication-assisted treatment plans include sublingual and injectable buprenorphine (Brixadi and Sublocade), as well as Vivitrol for opioid use disorder. For alcohol use disorder we utilize Vivitrol and acamprosate. We offer very flexible group and individual support to our clients while they are in treatment.
Effectiveness of MAT
The science behind MAT is proven, with high rates of success in helping individuals sustain recovery. Studies show that MAT increases patient survival, improves retention in treatment, decreases illicit opiate use and other criminal activity among people with substance use disorders, and improves birth outcomes among women with substance use disorders who are pregnant. It’s a cornerstone of our therapeutic approach at MPW, giving our patients their best chance of a successful, long-term recovery.
MAT Reduces Opioid Overdose Deaths: Patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) who participate in a MAT program are approximately 50% less likely to die from an opioid overdose compared to those who do not receive MAT. (Source: National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2018)
Decreases Illicit Opioid Use: The use of medications like buprenorphine or methadone as part of MAT has been associated with a reduction in the use of illicit opioids by 67% among individuals with OUD. (Source: The Lancet, 2016)
Long-term Abstinence: Patients treated with MAT, especially when combined with counseling and psychological support, are more likely to achieve long-term abstinence. About 61% of patients remain abstinent for one year after starting MAT, whereas those treated without MAT have significantly lower abstinence rates. (Source: Journal of Addiction Medicine, 2018)
